In this post we are going to configure the StoreFront for use with Excalibur.

How to install Citrix Excalibur Tech Preview (part 3)

In my previous posts I covered the prerequisites and the installation of the next generation of XenApp and XenDesktop called “Excalibur”.

In this post I will cover the “Studio” part of the configuration of Excalibur.

When the installation is complete and you launch the “Studio” application you are presented with this screen. From this “Welcome” page you can create an empty site , create a full deployment or join an existing deployment. As this is the first installation the latter option obviously doesn’t apply. How to install Citrix Excalibur Tech Preview (part 2)

In the previous post I explained what the prerequisites are and what Excalibur is. In this post I’ll be showing you the basic installation of Excalibur. This setup is a single server with all options installed on 1 server. This is good for a test or PoC environment but never for a production environment. Always separate the database, StoreFront and delivery controller from each other.

How to install Citrix Excalibur Tech Preview (part 1)

Citrix has released the Tech Preview of Excalibur recently (beginning of November). This new version is a melt between XenDesktop and XenApp as we know it now. So for all of the XenApp fans I must disappoint you…. No more XenApp!!!

My idea is to cut it up in a couple of blog posts to keep it from being one big long, and not fun to read, post. So I split it up in a couple of posts which I will be spreading over a few days.

How to install Citrix Receiver 3.3

Citrix has released Receiver 3.3 a while ago now. But every now and then I see that people are having difficulties with installing it.

Receiver 3.3 assumes that you are working with the new way of publishing apps and desktops. When you are still using the webplugin only (for use with Web Interface) and you are not publishing apps and desktops through StoreFront/ Cloudgateway then you can run into some “issues” with installing Receiver 3.3.

The provided solution is a workaround to bypass the “Enter your work or email or server address” message at the end of the installation.

Blank Citrix Web Interface page

For a repro of a problem my customer has I ran into the following issue when installing Citrix Web Interface 5.3 (I know that 5.4 is available but for this issue I needed 5.3 Nerd smile).

After installing default IIS with the IIS 6 Management Compatibility I got a nice blank webpage when visiting the Citrix Web Interface.

When checking the installation/configuration of IIS I noticed that I missed some features in the installation of IIS.

Web Server Common HTTP Features

  • Static Content Not Installed
  • Directory Browsing Not Installed
  • HTTP Errors Not Installed

After installing these components the problem of my blank webpage were gone. Open-mouthed smile

Install AD on Windows 8 server

Hi guys,

Unfortunately Microsoft has decided that they scratched the “DCPROMO” command from Windows Server 8 tin install and configure Active Directory.

You now need to install and configure AD through the “Server Manager”. I’ve made an installation guide how to install and configure Active Directory on a Windows 8 Server.

Boot 2 VHD

Hi guys,

Here’s a multi video instruction to setup your boot to VHD configuration. The entire instruction can be found here, but the videos are shown down here.

In this multi-part video series we will dive deep into a the new virtualization feature built into Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. It is called Native Boot To VHD (AKA: Boot2VHD). This is the one virtualization platform that allows virtualization inside of the virtualized machine. Yes, you can run Hyper-V or Virtual PC from inside a Boot to VHD machine. There are lots of use cases for this technology; we will cover many of them. Just dual boot your machine to a drive that is a VHD file.

It is very clean, as the entire OS is in a VHD file. Having the OS fully encapsulated in a VHD means no changes are needed to partitions, and there is no confusion as to what files are for what OS. We will look at how to deploy it in different scenarios and we will take a deep dive into the boot technology (BCDEdit) that makes this new feature possible. Upon finishing this video series you will know how to setup a system with Boot To VHD. You will be able to deploy Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 in a VHD on a machine that is already running a new OS, or on a machine with nothing on it yet (bare metal). SCVMM 2012 communications ports

When you install the SCVMM 2012 you can assign some of the ports that it will use for communications and file transfers between the VMM components.
