FAQ: Using Citrix Receiver on Windows 8 and Windows RT

Citrix has released a list of FAQ what you can expect from the Receiver on Win8 and WinRT devices.

Q: Which are the Citrix products that Windows 8 support (Intel based devices)?

Citrix supports the use of the following Citrix clients for use on Windows 8:

  • Receiver for Windows 3.3 (CitrixReceiver.exe) Click here to download Receiver for Windows 3.3. This can be used with Web Interface or StoreFront (CloudGateway Express), however cannot be used on ARM-based devices. Applications are launched from within the Receiver app or can be pinned to the Windows Start Menu. Receiver for Windows 3.3 can be installed along with Win8/RT on the same Intel based machine. It can be used in conjunction with other Citrix clients such as the ShareFile Sync Supports multiple sessions, can be configured with CloudGateway Enterprise for Web and SaaS apps or Follow-me ShareFile data.
  • Receiver for Win8/RT Preview Note: This version requires CloudGateway (Storefront) for desktop and applications access and a properly-configured Access Gateway (Enterprise Edition) 10.X for remote access (AG 5.x is not supported). It cannot be used with Web Interface. Receiver for Win8/RT Preview must be downloaded from the Microsoft Windows Store via a Windows Live account. It can be used on Intel based desktops, laptops and tablets as well as ARM-based Windows tablets such as the Microsoft Surface. Applications are launched from within the Receiver app or can be pinned to the Windows Start Menu. There is no Citrix Connection Center in this Receiver.
  • ShareFile Sync for Windows 1.3
  • ShareFile Outlook Plug-in
  • Application Streaming is supported via App- V only

Q: Which are the Citrix products that Windows RT support (ARM based devices such as the Microsoft Surface)?

Citrix supports the use of the following Citrix clients for use on Windows RT:

Receiver for Win8/RT Preview Note: This version requires CloudGateway (Storefront) for desktop and applications access and a properly-configured Access Gateway (Enterprise Edition) for remote access (AG 5.x is not supported). Receiver for Win8/RT Preview cannot be used with Web Interface. It must be downloaded from the Microsoft Windows Store via a Windows Live account. It can be used on Intel based desktops, laptops and tablets as well as ARM-based Windows tablets such as the Microsoft Surface. Applications are launched from within the Receiver app or can be pinned to the Windows Start Menu. There is no Citrix Connection Center in this Receiver.

Q: What are the known limitations associated with using Windows 8?

The following are the currently known limitations involved with using the above products in conjunction with XenApp and XenDesktop:

  • Windows 8 supports two versions of Internet Explorer 10:
  • A desktop version launched from the Windows 8 Desktop The Desktop version works with Receiver for Web (StoreFront) and Web Interface without any issues in conjunction with Citrix Receiver 3.3 only. No support for Receiver for Win8/RT.
  • A Windows 8 Style (touch optimized) version accessed from the Start Menu The Windows 8 style Internet Explorer works with Web/StoreFront and Web Interface with some limitations with Citrix Receiver 3.3 only. Windows 8 Style Internet Explorer has no Support for Receiver for Win8/RT. Client detection or upgrade and ActiveX Plug-in will not work with this version of Internet Explorer. The Launch.ica file is prompted for the user to open with Receiver or save the file. The Receiver for Web (StoreFront web page) launches in a distorted view but apps still display and launch again only when Receiver 3.3 is installed. Web Interface web page opens as expected and launches apps successfully again only when Receiver 3.3 is installed.
  • Smart Card authentication support is only in conjunction with the Enterprise version of Citrix Receiver for Windows.
  • CitrixReceiverEnterprise.exe version of Receiver for Windows is not supported on Windows 8. Thus there is no further support planned for PNAgent applications in notification area (system tray).

Q: Which are the Citrix products that support for Windows 8 for test and evaluation?

  • Secure Access Plug-in AGEE Plugin 10.x
  • Accelerator Plug-in 5.7
  • HDX Real Time Media Engine 1.1 Plug-in for the Citrix Receiver for Windows 3.3 (part of the HDX Optimization Pack for Lync)
