Book Review: Citrix XenMobile Device Management

2147ENI had the opportunity to review this book published by Packt Publishing and written by Akash Phoenix.

I have no affiliation with either the author nor Packt publishing.

This book takes you through the installation and configuration of all necessary products and explains it in simple layman’s terms(with pictures and clear text). Configuring NetScaler, licensing and certificates are discussed. Also some really basic troubleshooting steps are provided in the small but very easy to read book.

What I miss in this book is an in depth approach to all the features XenMobile has to offer. Troubleshooting chapter (1 page) is really basic and doesn’t provide anything you really need to check when the *@# hits the fan….

If you don’t have any understanding of Citrix XenMobile Device Management this is a must have to start with. Every step is clearly explained and detailed what to configure. For the more experienced Citrix XenMobile admin this book can be too easy and misses the depth for configuring and advanced troubleshooting of this great product.

Book review Citrix XenDesktop 7 cookbook

7463EN_Citrix Cover.jpgPackt publishing contacted me recently to review a new book they published on Citrix XenDesktop 7.

Gaspare A. Silvestri has written this book and does explain all the various settings and features of XenDesktop 7. Even if you aren’t experienced with this product he will guide you through this one and keep you interested in knowing more about this product.

As you all know I’m a great fan of using screenshot to enhance the readability of a document/post or book. Gaspare does this also in this book and it makes it easier to read and even helps you in where you can find certain settings.

If you don’t have this book yet, I would recommend it to add this to your bookshelf and read it.

empty outlook folder pane after Windows updates

Like a good MS supporter (ahum) does is install the Windows Updates every month. last night I updated my Win 8 system with the latest patches and this morning I cam across this beautiful Outlook folder pane:

After uninstalling kb2810009 and kb2817630 the folder pane was back again.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix this bug soon….

Just my 2 cents for today.

This book covers first what virtualization options there are in the field and what it is.

The book discusses various installation options for Hyper-V, management consoles and is a must read for every level of Hyper-V administrator. Whether you are a starter in the field or a veteran Hyper-V admin. This book covers all bases and speaks to you at the right level with the correct amount of information.

How to Enable Continuous CDF Tracing in Provisioning Services 7.0

This article describes how to enable continuous CDF tracing in Provisioning Services 7.0.

Requirements

CDFMonitor

Background

With the introduction of Provisioning Services 7.0, the Provisioning Services logging mechanism has changed from persistent log files to CDF tracing. Provisioning Services no longer logs streaming event to a log file. You must configure CDF tracing to capture persistent logging for determining the root cause of a problem.

Procedure

To enable continuous CDF tracing in Provisioning Services 7.0, complete the following procedure:

  • Download the Provisioning Services specific configuration file from this article.
  • Extract the files to the C:cdfmonitor folder.
  • Replace the CDFMonitor.exe.config that comes with CDFMonitor with the one downloaded from this article.
  • Open a command line interface and open the C:cdfmonitor folder.
  • Run the following command:
    cdfmonitor.exe /installservice

    CDFMonitor runs as a service that persists even after the server restarts. Continuous CDF trace is then captured on all modules. The trace file will grow to 100 MB in size and will rotate between five files. The moment the CDFMonitor service is restarted, a new CDF trace file is created.

DSCheck Maintenance Assistant

Citrix has released a new tool (for GUI lovers amongst us techies) for DSCheck options and queries to make our live easier. Be aware that the tool (even with GUI) can break your environment so USE CAUTION!!!

DSCheck Maintenance Assistant is designed to facilitate the process of running dscheck commands on a XenApp server. The tool provides a graphical user interface for dscheck.exe that the XenApp administrators can use to clean and validate their datastore.

Prerequisites

  • Install .NET Framework 2.0 or later
  • log on as a user with Local Administrative privileges

Installing DSCheck Maintenance Assistant

DSCheck Maintenance Assistant is a standalone application. You need not install the application; also you can run the application from any folder local on the XenApp server.
